So you’ve got your new FYR Grill, now what? First of all, welcome to the FYR family. I worked with several of my friends and fellow backyard BBQ enthusiast to develop a grill that has it all. We take flavor, heat control, and live-fire tradition very seriously; which I’m hoping you’ll see transferred into the functionality of this grill. Before you jump into your first Reverse-Seared Ribeye or any French Onion Steak Skewers, let’s get your grill set up the right way.

The initial unboxing and setup process of the grill is straightforward and relatively quick. After you’ve built the grill, you’ll see how it easily breaks down so you can pack it up for grilling on the go! With a second set of hands, getting the grill box packed into place, or pulled back out and set up, is easy.

Pick the Right Spot and Open It Up
How to set up the FYR Grill starts with the basics. Start by choosing an open area with a level surface. I recommend concrete, stone, or any solid ground that you’re not worried about assembling a grill on. Pick a place that’s easy to move around and has plenty of room for setting out the grill parts and pieces.

Open the packaging and lay out all the components where you can see them. You’ll notice the grill body is a solid beast—it’s heavy-duty and built to last. You’ll be able to build the majority of the grill on your own, however, lifting the body of the grill onto the legs is difficult without a friend. So, grab a buddy and get it into position. It’s much easier with two people, and safer too.
What’s included in the box
Your FYR Grill arrives as a complete live-fire cooking system. You’ll get the FYR Grill itself along with the Santa Maria attachment for smooth, adjustable height control over the flame. A cordless rotisserie attachment lets you spin roasts and make Rotisserie Chicken with ease, while the six-piece skewer set (packed neatly in its own case) opens the door to kebabs and fire-kissed vegetables. The included chimney helps you light charcoal quickly and consistently, and the grill grate tool and charcoal tool give you everything you need to manage the fire, adjust heat zones, and handle the grates safely.
How to set up the FYR Grill with Confidence
Flip the wire base upside down to start. Attach the wheels on one end and the solid feet on the other. The grill stays mobile but feels grounded when it counts. Once you set the base, slide in the vertical posts and secure them with the clamps. Keep everything snug—this becomes your foundation for every cook to come.

Now it’s time for the big lift. With that second set of hands, position the grill body onto the frame. It should sit flush and feel locked in. You’ll install the internal pieces next: cast iron grates, ash pans, and coal dividers. These give you heat control and cooking flexibility. Make sure everything moves freely, fits well, and feels balanced.
If you’re more of a visual learner, I have a video of how to assemble the FYR Grill. Check out the below and build your grill with me!
Do a Burn-In Before You Cook on the FYR Grill
Before your first official cook, I recommend a burn-in to season the grill and eliminate any factory residue. Light a small fire using a chimney starter and lump charcoal or hardwood chunks. Let the grill come up to high heat, and then let that high heat burn for 20 to 30 minutes.
While it’s hot, brush down the grates, open and close the vents, and get a feel for how the Triflow™ vent system works. Once you’re done, let the grill cool down completely and clean out the ash pans.
Now you’re ready for the real thing.
Start Your First Cook Like a Pro
Here’s how I run through a cook once the fire is rolling.
First, get your coals going early. You want a good bed of glowing embers before any food hits the grates. While the fire builds, set up any attachments you plan to use—grates, rotisserie arms, skewers, whatever fits the cook.

Once you’ve got some serious heat going, put on your heat-resistant gloves and use a poker or tongs to arrange the fire. Create zones—one side for direct searing, another for slower indirect cooking. That’s where the coal dividers come in handy.
Preheat your cast iron or cooking surface until it’s ripping hot. Temperature control in live fire is about feel, so keep your thermometer nearby and test doneness as you go. This isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it situation. This is a live fire experience and you’re in charge!

Clean the FYR Grill and Keep It Sharp
After cooking, let the coals burn down naturally. Once things have cooled, scrape down the grates while they’re still a bit warm. Empty the ash pans and wipe off any grease or food drips.
Every few cooks, check your bolts, clamps, and wheels—tighten anything that feels loose. Keep your grill covered or under shelter when not in use. Treat it well, and it’ll stay ready for whatever you throw at it next.
Let the Fire Do the Talking
And just like that, you know how to set up the FYR Grill. From a simple steak over glowing coals to complex rotisserie setups, the FYR Grill is your new go-to for flavor, control, and serious backyard cooking.

The setup only takes minutes, but the experiences you’ll create around it will last way longer. Fire it up, enjoy that first cook, and tag me when you do—I want to see what you’re making.
