Nothing beats the authentic taste of fire cooked foods. From that blackened crust to the earthy flavor, there is something special about cooking like this. So why not try to add some carbs to that diet? Low and behold, I present to you my camp ready coal roasted bread!

Roasted Bread

Forged from the flames, coal roasted bread has become a favorite in my household. It’s very simple to cook and extremely delicious. To start, you need a good fire and bread dough.

I highly recommend using pizza dough from your local grocery store, but you are definitely welcome to try your own homemade recipe. Next, you need to let that fire roar, using only seasoned hard wood or charcoal, until it has broken down into hot coals (about 1-2 hours).

Now lets cook coal roasted bread!

Once your fire has turned into hot coals, push them together to make a nice flat pile ready to cook. Kneed your dough to your desired shape for the coal roasted bread (we prefer an oval) and place directly on the coals like below.

The coal roasted bread does not take long to cook once it is on the coals. Flip it to its uncooked side once you see a nice charring (about 1-2 minutes). Since the bread is so quick to roast its outside layer, do not be worried about coals sticking too it.

Allow the bread to roast on the second side for another 1-2 minutes or until it has a nice charring as well. Pull it off the coals place it onto a plate. Make sure to get off any remaining coals that might be on it.

Finally, you can add whatever toppings you desire! For a savory flavor on your coal roasted bread, try adding some olive oil, roma tomatoes, and red onion (see below). If your more in the mood for something sweet, add some nutella, strawberries, and blueberries (see below)!

Overall, coal roasted bread is a delicious treat for cooking on the fire. Just make sure to enjoy every bite because it goes quickly!
