I’m changing up my diet a bit, but I still want to eat really well over the fire. Who doesn’t? This healthy steak bowl has become my go-to perfect meal. I’m making it every. Single. Day. It’s definitely become part of my regular dinner rotation since it’s high in protein, low carb and has quality fats as well. Even if you’re not cutting back, I think you’ll be making it over and over again too.

Why You’ll Love This Healthy Steak Bowl
What takes a steak bowl from OK to freakin’ delicious is the quality of the ingredients. Like I said, I wanted to pack a ton of flavor into my meals without overdoing it on the calories, so making some deliberate choices about what goes into this steak bowl was key. That basically turned it into a low carb steak burrito bowl!

First off, we’ve got a quality cooked steak. You can pick a lean option here or go grass-fed for the healthy fats. Then, the sweet potato is loaded with tons of nutrients. The fried eggs add a protein boost, the avocado gives us more healthy fats, and this incredible honey chipotle sauce for a sweet but spicy finish. For the sauce, I substituted Greek yogurt for sour cream to cut back on fat and boost the protein. The flavor and texture is spot on.
This combo of ingredients has been a great option for me, but keep in mind that I’m not a doctor (surprise!). Do what works best for your body! The best part about a grain bowl is that you can swap in your favorite toppings and proteins to tailor it to your diet.

Healthy Steak Bowl Ingredients
- Steak: Grab your favorite steak and some of my Cowboy Butter Seasoning.
- Honey Chipotle Sauce: Because every bowl needs a freakin’ delicious sauce. We’re making this sauce with Greek yogurt, lime juice, chipotle in adobo, local honey, and kosher salt and black pepper to taste.
- Garnish: We’ll finish off this bowl with a baked sweet potato, fried eggs, sliced avocado, everything bagel seasoning and pickled red onions. You can skip the red onion if you’re not a fan, but I dig the acidity to round out the flavors.

The Mighty Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes have a ton going for them on the nutrition front. Just in case the flavor alone wasn’t enough for you, here are a few other points in their favor:
- They’re super high in beta carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A to help with your vision and immune system.
- They have lots of potassium and fiber, which helps with digestion.
- Because of their natural sugars, sweet potatoes can help curb your sweet tooth!

How to Make A Healthy Steak Bowl
Let’s start by making our baked sweet potato. Heat your oven or air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, lightly oil the outside of 1 sweet potato and poke holes in it with a pork. Place it in a foil pan in the oven to bake for 60-70 minutes, until fully softened. Once it’s done, take it out of the oven and keep it warm.

Now for the steak! Slather your steak in a neutral oil and generously season with my Cowboy Butter Seasoning. Then, place steak on a medium-high heat fire (about 350 degrees F). Grill the steak for 6-8 minutes, until the meat’s internal temperature reaches 120 degrees F. Once it’s hit temp, remove from the grill and let the steak rest for five minutes.

While the steak is resting, mix together all the ingredients for the honey chipotle sauce: Greek yogurt, juice from two limes, pureed chipotle in adobo, local honey, and salt and pepper to taste. Set the sauce to the side.

To finish your healthy steak bowl, add the cooked sweet potato to the center of a bowl. Using a sharp knife (I’m currently loving mine from the Montana Knife Company), slice the steak on a cutting board and place on top of the sweet potato. Round out your bowl with with fried eggs, sliced avocado, everything bagel seasoning and pickled red onions. Drizzle the honey chipotle sauce over the top, serve and enjoy!

What to Serve with Healthy Steak Bowls
This healthy steak bowl is a meal in itself, but here’s the best thing about this recipe: you can riff on it six ways to Sunday. Add some brown rice, white rice or cauliflower rice for steak rice bowls. Or, cook up some red bell peppers and black beans, sprinkle with chili powder and top with homemade pico de gallo and fresh cilantro for steak taco bowls. Honestly, it’s a great meal prep recipe since you can use any roasted veggies or whole grains you have around for your healthy steak bowl. Just don’t skip the juicy steak and honey chipotle yogurt sauce!
Leftovers and Reheating
If you’ve got leftover steak, wrap it in foil in an airtight container and store in the fridge for 3-4 days. To reheat, bring it back out to your grill and warm it up in the foil at medium heat for 5-10 minutes.
The baked sweet potato will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can reheat this on the stovetop, in the oven or in the air fryer.
Store the honey chipotle sauce in a mason jar in the fridge for up to a week and drizzle on anything and everything for extra flavor.

FAQs
Honestly, whatever you want! Some lean, high-protein steak options include eye of round, top round, bottom round, top sirloin, flank steak, tenderloin, tri-tip and sirloin tip. Basically, you can’t go wrong, it’s all freakin’ delicious.
The kick in this recipe comes from the chipotle puree, so either increase or decrease the amount you use to make your taste buds happy. Definitely! The honey chipotle sauce actually gets better after sitting for a day or two, since the flavors meld together. The sweet potato keeps really well too. Feel free to make these components a day or two ahead to save time on a weeknight dinner. The steak, eggs and avocado are best day-of. So, I’d save those elements for the day you want to eat them.
